Football fields, or pitches, are rectangular playing surfaces used for the sport of football (soccer). The long length of the field must be between 295’-394’ | 90-120 m, while the shorter width is between 148’-295’ | 45-90 m. Goals are located on each opposing goal line and are 24’ | 7.32 m wide.
The pitch is rectangular in shape. The longer sides are called touchlines, and the shorter sides are called the goal lines. The two goal lines must be between 45 and 90 m (50 and 100 yd) wide, and be the same length. The two touchlines must be between 90 and 120 m (100 and 130 yd) long, and be the same length.
A soccer pitch is between 100-130 yards (90-120 meters) long by 50-100 yards (45–90 meters) wide. In an international game, the size of the pitch must be between 110-120 yards (100-110 m) long by 70-80 yards (64-75 m) wide. As you can see, a soccer pitch is fairly big and definitely wider than an NFL pitch.
Since the end of the 17th century, the process of pitching stumps into the ground to set up a game of cricket has been called “pitching the stumps”. By the late 1800s, people started using “pitch” as a noun to describe a playing area. By 1900, pitch was used specifically for a football (or soccer) playing area. Pitch = playing area. In England, the term “field” usually refers to an open space, as in a pasture or grassy area, not a playing area.
As per standard pitch measurements, the penalty spot is 11 m (12 yards) from the center of the goal. The penalty arc is 9.15 m (10 yards) from the penalty spot. The goal area is 5.5 x 11 m, and goal kicks by the defending team are taken from this area. Overall, the penalty area is 16.5 m (18 yards) in length and 40.3 m (44 yards) in length.
